Lyons Township High School’s main entrance wall at South Campus has a new face lift thanks to a new spirited mural. The school motto, “Vita Plena – The quest for the fulfilling life,” is the first thing students and visitors see when entering South Campus. The project evolved out of response to students’ inquiries during a Peaceable Schools Initiative (PSI) forum.
PSI is an organization which promotes students as leaders to create a positive school climate that welcomes and celebrates all students. PSI activities are designed to develop an environment that supports positive personal interactions between students, students and staff, and staff and parents/community members.
Each year, students participate in an open forum with staff. The students suggested there be more blue and gold in the school and that the building needed a little refreshing. The students have taken ownership in improving school spirit and are continuing to foster a positive environment to learn, explained South Campus Associate Principal Therese Nelson.
A year ago, Boosters met with the administration to discuss ideas and funding. The administration suggested the newly renovated main entrance and its blank wall could encompass and highlight what students envisioned.
Students and administration worked with a company to design the artwork to incorporate the LT lion, blue and gold, and focus on student involvement in academics, athletics, fine arts, and student activities. Student involvement in these four areas engages students and increases their sense of belonging to LT.
